Australia, day one of our tour, part one

Day one of our seven day tour called "The best of the Northland".
It was a jammed packed tour with lots to do and see and the best thing for making sure you saw what you should see on a trip to Australia.
The train we were waiting for would take us to the top of a mountain that used to be a gold mining place.

My first view of sugar cane. I would see a LOT of it during our time in Queensland. We were there in August which was the beginning of harvest. Harvest would go on till November. Sugar cane plants last about five years and then the field is burned off to get rid of the plants and, in particular, the pests in the fields. The biggest pest being rats. In the burned and burning off fields we saw, the sky was filled with the hawks and eagles that were scavenging the fields.

Banana plants were everywhere too!

The train arrived, with it's lovely antique cars. The ride itself took about two hours.

The interior of the cars were stamped steel ceilings and wooden benching. This was a tour that has been around for a long, long time. These cars were from the early years of the 1900's.

I'm near the back of the train, it's that long!

We get higher and higher and look down to the Coral Sea.

We crossed many of these bridges on our way up.

Some lovely waterfalls on the way up.

The skyrail station for the ride we would take later in the day.

The village we are dropped off in is a retail heaven. Butterfly museums, snake zoos, every kind of eatery including German Tucker. And this lovely crocodile.

The little mall with every kind of thing to buy. I got some t-shirts and pins for my hat. Things like crocodile belts and kangaroo skins were available too. A bit beyond my budget.

The beautiful Sulphur Cockatoo.
