AUSTRALIA ! We fly in

The flight from Wellington to Cairns (with one aircraft change) is about 6 hours. We were flying into Cairns at about 2pm in the afternoon.

We got our fist view of the Great Barrier Reef from the aircraft. I was surprised as we flew in was that the coast was more mountainous than I had imagined.

The sun was blindingly bright!

The bus ride from the airport had me all agog with how different everything looked. The brightness of the plants, the shade solutions for the houses, the houses themselves. A style of architecture called the Queenslander.

Our first night, we walked around just for the fun and to orient ourselves. A bunch of, seemingly, birds attracted us to their tree and lo and behold, it was fruit bats!

There were birds everywhere. This is one of the varieties of Ibis.

Plants are very flamboyant in Australia. The colour is blindingly bright.

This shows at least four types of palms. I saw so many types and still love them despite the fact that they don't give much shade.
